New York Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner told the New York Post yesterday that former Yankee second baseman and Mets manager Willie Randolph always has a spot within the organization, although not as manager.
"There's certainly some stuff I can think of for one of the greatest infielders I've ever seen," Steinbrenner was quoted as saying. "If he had left to take over the Red So[cks] maybe I would have had a problem with that. He's a Yankee. He'll always be a Yankee. Even the Mets never completely accepted him because they thought he was a Yankee."
Randolph, who grew up as a die-hard Mets fan, was fired by the team last week.
The Post apparently tried to get a more controversial quote out of big Hank, but Steinbrenner responded by saying he isn't "'one of those talk-radio types' who spews on subjects he knows little about."
Um, really?
